It’s not your fault the show sucks, Yami.
Unlike my fellow sufferers, I didn’t blog this show from beginning to end, so I have a lot of stored up frustration that I haven’t been able to vent until now.
I can’t be positive about this show. I went into To-Love-Ru with absolutely no expectations whatsoever. I was literaly just looking for a fun and mindless show to pass the time, and this ecchi, harem comedy seemed to fit the bill at first glance. But oh how wrong I was in expecting this show to be any good. Though I admit it has its moments of comedy, these sre to few and far between to justify the stream of nonsense that’s crammed into your brain whenever you watch the show. I can take the fanservice, the lack of plot, and the zero character developement (especially as we had a LOLRESET ending) but what put me off liking this show was the random crap they kept throwing out in each episode. To-Love-Ru is waaaaaaaaay out there at times, only in a horrible, horrible way.
So, what’s good about To-Love-Ru?
- Yami-chan. She is just so awesome in every way, tsun/yandere transforming lolita killing machine who loves pastries.
- The OP and the 2nd ED, as well as a couple of the music tracks (one of which showed up around three times through the whole series).
- KING DEVILUKE, CHIBI MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE. BOW BEFORE HIS MIGHT AND BOOMING VOICE.
- Mikan, the greatest little sister of all time. Cosplay Mikan = INSTANT WIN.
- Some moments were actually hilarious, and they were most likely what kept me watching the series in hope of more of that type of comedy.
- Episode 24 with the multiple personalities of Lala. Funny almost all the way through though the end of the episode was horribly cliche (like half the other times in this show).
And what wasn’t so good?
- Absolutely everything else. Here is the complete “Ever Closer To Becoming The Number One Man In The Universe” saga, accompanied by what I think was bad about the series.
Real men pose nekkid in front of their sisters.
Either that or he’s trying to put on some sort of invisible trousers.
- The random moments that happened in the episodes that the creators thought could be considered “comedy”. Some of it was weird, some of it just fell completely flat, and some parts were downright disturbing (like the episode with CG tentacle rape. Exactly). Then there was that episode devoted to a completely imaginary show that was airing in the world of To-Love-Ru itself that was just painful to watch.
Real men are into S&M.
Either that or he’s joined some sort of water circus and become a tamer’s lion kitty cat.
- Lala’s voice and character. She’s the stupidest genius I’ve ever seen, and whenever she opens her mouth I feel like stuffing a sock in it just to get her to stop screeching.
Real men like to have their swimsuits sucked off.
Either that or the pole has… other uses for him…
- Every other character in this show is a worse version of a stereotype. Rito’s the hopeless lead who inexplicably gains a bevy of beautiful girls despite being bad at everything he does, Haruna’s the quiet, reserved shy girl, Saruyama’s the male lead’s friend who just can’t seem to get any, Mikado’s the hawt nurse that every boy at the school fantasises about, Saki’s the spoilt ojou-sama with followers who cater to her every whim and I’m not even going to kepp doing this as you’re most likely got the point by now. There’s nothing unique about ANY of the characters in this show.
Real men let their bodies be used as weapons by girls…
And blush when girls touch them.
Either that or the stimulus was too much for him and he had an… “accident”.
- Animation = generally bad and re-used often. At least there weren’t any moments of QUALITY in the show; taking a small budget and making an overall crappy looking show is better than having great moments and horrible moments, at least.
Real men get their asses kicked almost every day.
Either that or he’s a masochist.
- There was no sort of coherent plot throughout the entire series. I wasn’t expecting much from what I’d seen before hand, but something, ANYTHING to give the show some direction that wasn’t cooked up by writers on crack would’ve been nice. Some episodes didn’t even end properly, we get to the height of a crisis, the credits roll, and then the next week everyne acts like nothing happened. Then there’s the point when Lala reveals she’s an alien, which goes something like this.
Lala: I’m an alien!
Everyone who didn’t know: Okay!
Real men let people who want to kill them get as close as possible.
Though I have to admit, since it’s Yami-chan, even REAL real men wouldn’t stand a chance.
But Rito still looks like a retard.
- Character developement was non-existent. Far from resolving the supposed love triangle in the show, the creators actually had the balls to reset the whole thing to make the show even more inconclusive than School Rumble. And THAT takes some doing.
Real men dress up as women.
Either that or he’s looking for some trap-tastic “action” in that get up.
- Fanservice can be used for comedy. It can be used subtly. Throwing tentacle hentai in your audiences face every chance you have is NOT good fanservice. It’s not funny and it’s not attractive, it’s just boring and pointless. Plus, there wasn’t enough Yami-service in the show at all.
Real men don’t want hot girls in their beds.
Either that or…
You know, there’s really no excuse this time. You suck, Rito.
So overall, watching this show completely confirms the fact that I am both a masochist and a saint, slowly killing myself for the sake of people who had the wisdom to get out and/or not watch this show before their spirits were sucked into the black hole that was To-love-ru, churned up and left a husk of their former selves. I won’t read the manga, as simply by being connected to this anime it has become unreadable for fear of recalling the horrible moments in the series.
Awwwww.
Poor, irritating, oblivious, hasn’t showed any meaningful emotions until the last episode Lala.
NEVER AGAIN.
Classic case of good characters stuck in shitty shows. Yami ;______;
Boy am I glad I stayed away from this one. I actually watched episode 09 on a whim and found it horrible EXCEPT for the FLCL reference, when Lala picks up an “upgraded” tennis racket and whacks Flying Rocket Alien Prince into the stratosphere. Made me chuckle. The other 22 minutes? Cringe.
Reading it is much better than watching it… though not by much.
You know, I would say something about WHY DID Mx0 GET CANCELED AND CRAP LIKE TOLOVERU NOT ALFJNEOFUBEAOIGBVAL:KDGNPAOUNREBNAOBNAOBN. But, I think that’s been discussed already. 😐
Because hopeless virgins fans likes their fanservice animes more than seeing a tv show with more quality.y
In return you saved me (and many others) 572 minutes worth of life by not recommending anyone to watch this crap. You’re our hero!
But hey, I still downloaded this thing and I still wasted 572 minutes of internets and 5 gigs worth of hard drive space. We’re all fooled.
@Shin
Mourn the misuse of the hawt loli. MOURN.
@Korasoff
Ugh, don’t remind me off that nonsensical episode. (Funny how that statement can apply to the whole series).
@ffviiknight
NEVER AGAIN.
@Zan
There is no justice in the world, unfortunately. The world of anime has taught me this, as well as many other things.
@bluemist
DELETE WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE.
I mourn for Yami as well
you describe the whole anime in just a few words, the manga wasnt that bad, in fact have a little more plot than the anime, and there is no non-sense bizarre change theme escenes like in the anime, the manga is more for you know, afternoon youre bored you dont have nothing to do, just like the anime supose to be, but i do know WTF happens, and yeah, MxO didnt deserve be canceled….
@The Sojourner
We all do.
@rockan
I like to feel compelled to read a manga, and having to be bored to read it isn’t much of a recommendation.
Beh…if you just watch something while you waiting for a real, funny anime (like “Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro Chan” XD ) it’s not real bad, asd…
Sorry for my bad english, I hope you understand 😀
Ciao dall’Italia ! 😛
I personally loved the eps. The main bits were the comedy and (il admit) the romance. Since theres no romance in a geeks life he looks elsewhere 😛
But it was a bit confusing at times, there were about 5 episodes that had nothing to do with anything, especially that one about… that fire chick in the movie rito and lala wtach.
I wasn’t satisfied with the ending, but I must admit that there were great episodes. I think there could be a second season, because the final episode doesn’t conclude anything.
For the record, they did that reset thing in the manga too, only they used it to help advance things to the next stage a bit. It was the same idea as in the anime, in that Lala wanted to start over from square one and actually earn Rito’s love. After that, it went back to the same old same old. I’d really like to see a decent running plot develop to tie everything together. If they could do that, this manga would suddenly have much more potential. That, and they’d have to come up with some new jokes because seriously, how many times can Rito just brush with someone and go red in the face? Have him start getting used to it and out of the awkwardness little by little, at least.
I know not many people like the series, but personally, I think while it has potential to be a whole lot more and definitly needs to re-invent itself, I still enjoy reading it. I just take it as a series of short stories. Incidents aren’t necessarily set one day after the other, they’re just, individual stories.
But this all is probably falling on deaf ears anyway.
@Falconkrest
Your english was great, I completely understood. I wish Rito was beaten by Dokuro 😛
@Azated
There were times when it was funny. It’s just that they were few and far between.
@Just
No second season. Please, no.
@Andrew
I haven’t read the manga so I can’t give an accurate judgement on anything you wrote, unfortunately. From the few fans I know of the manga, I’m pretty sure they didn’t think the anime did it much justice.
from the “profesional” point of view of course it sucks.
but, it was fun to watch x) its a good comedy.
[…] that comes at the end of a particularly bad show, or even halfway through. Case in point: To-love-Ru or however hell you spell the name of that travesty. I had a morbid fascination with this show even […]
Omg please, please, this is an ecchi-comedy, if you don’t like the classic scenes wich every show of this kind has, please, don’t watch it. I’ll never understand why some people have funny in wasting their time on shows that they don’t like, maybe just for talk like you?
ok ppl i just have to say my thing here …xDDDD
i like the manga very very much i read all 161 chapters in like 2 to 3 days so it was funny as hell and i watched 2 ep of the anime so far ……….. so i guess i can say this i know the anime does have some things very very wrong but its clos e to the maga so what can you say the anime does not follow the maga the whole way so it lack a lot of really funny poses and things you can see in the maga and more information to ….. so i really really think you all should read it it is really funny and you all will rout for yuuki and lala or yuuki and …someone :))
as for your question WHATS WITH YUUKI HES NOT A REAL MAN AND YOU BASHING ON HIM LIKE SO … i just say lol thats the point hes is just kid thats shy and is with lots and lots of girls …. he was not a big talker or a playboy ……. so now hes just new at this and has to think with girl is for him…….. THATS THE POINT tnx that is all i had to say:P
Dude, they focus on him and Horuna so much that it doesn’t even feel like a harem. It feels like rito, horuna, and their multiple shadows. They didn’t do the proper focus on the development of rito and lala to make you even think that they will even remotely get together. Instead, you see him and horuna all over each other, which makes me even wonder why they even have him and Lala all over each other in the opening. Lala busts her ass for him, even captures him a squid for his food, and the best she gets from him is an “I love you” that was only due to the heat of the moment and desperation, it’s pathetic. Honestly, I fell like they should never have introduced Lala to the show, because such an interesting character, despite how little depth they’ve given her so far, is wasted on a male lead that doesn’t even give her the time of day. All because he is hooked one a girl who had faith in him…… over flowers. That’s just shit bad writing. I don’t mind the wacky antics, or the fact that Lala is not explored much at all, yet, but I’m almost done with season one and Rito hasn’t shown any signs of interest towards Lala, he’s a brain dead moron to even the other obtuse males in other animes, the lack of a feel of a real harem, HIS ANNOYING OBSESSION WITH ONE GIRL OVER SOMETHING STUPID (seriously he’s coming off as a creep), the shallow character development, Saruyama not at least giving the cat alien a shot (which would have given the show an interesting twist considering that they could’ve explored inter species romance and how a teen could handle children, and his growth as a person from the experience), all the unnecessary fan service (Lala is seriously given the eye candy role, when she could’ve easily been the best character had they explored her life and personality… which leads to my final issue), LALA BEING MORE OF A SIDE CHARACTER!!! Seriously, I’m only near the end of the first season and it’s pissing me off! Lala has, in my honest opinion, the most potential out of every character on the show! They set it up at the beginning with her mentioning how lonely she was at home, and how having someone listen made her feel a lot better, but instead they didn’t explore it and continued to push Rito and Horuna into the light, occasionally giving Lala some 5 minutes to goof and fuck up. They squandered her character to the point that I’m tempted to make my own version of the show where she receives better treatment as a character. She could easily have been explored and revealed to hide all of her worries and past feelings of sadness behind her goofy antics to keep her from breaking down into tears, then as the series progressed, she would calm down more, no longer feeling the need to goof off due to Rito being there for her and talking with her. That very same sadness could also have explained why she has so many inventions and why they constantly screwed up. She developed a compulsive need to invent, to suppress her sadness and loneliness more, and during the process of making these inventions her compulsive need to invent would grow, thus causing her to feel depressed if she lingered too long on an invention as her patience grew short due to her growing state of depression, which all would lead her rushing her inventions leaving out key elements necessary for the proper function of the invention. Over the course of the series her inventions could break down less or over just minor flaws, which would indicate that she has been taking more time to finish her creations, and thus indicate that her depression has lessened. This would be brought about by a better developed romantic element between the two in which she would open up to Rito more about her past and her suppressed feelings, at first he would try to ask but she would steer the conversation to something else or she would do something goofy to take his mind away from the conversation, thus ending it. When she would walk away to get materials to clean because of the accident it caused or to go off to do something else, she would instead go around a corner or into a room to cry a bit, then gather the materials or take care of her business before returning to Rito. Rito and Lala’s first meeting would be the night she crashed into his room still, but when they got to his room to talk, the guards wouldn’t show up so quickly, since they wouldn’t know for sure where she had teleported to. Rito would then question her as to where she was from, etc. (the usual), but when she brings up being lonely he would ask her why and for how long, to which she would change the conversation. He would try again the next day, just to have the conversation changed once again by a goofy outburst from the girl. He would try again every once in a while over the course of the next week, while still learning about the place she comes from and her age. Then, one night, she activates Peke to let him/her walk and talk, after charging him/her, but she failed to realize that her rushed creation of Peke left him traceable, having exhausted themselves and their options from the two to three week long search, za-whateverhisnameis starts trying to trace more of her inventions, but when he hits Peke he notices that he has succeeded, and they immediately pursue the trace. Meanwhile Rito will have asked again and told her that he feels that she should try talking about a bit of it, of course while being shy and awkward about saying it. She tries, and manages to tell him that it was because of her father being more focused on military efforts to expand his kingdom, too focused to have spent too much time with her when she was a child, then over the course of the series as we watch her break away from her depression and bad habits, we also see her develop into a woman, through her behavior, patience, and consideration for others when it comes to her antics. Rito would notice this throughout the series and come to love her more and more as the series progresses, while also getting to know the other girls more and dating a couple of them to help him figure out which one he wants, which would turn out to be Kotegawa, who would reject him because she would admit that, despite the fact that he is a very nice person, he isn’t her type. Contrary to what she originally thought, she found him to be too nice, so much that she came to only see him as a friend. He would go into a state of depression for a while, through which Lala would talk to him and let him know that there is still her. He would reject this stating that he wants Kotegawa. This in turn would cause Lala to sink back into depression, but she would fight it to try to cheer Rito up, knowing that her antics will just annoy him. Over time she will help him break out of his depression, and move forward with life, in which he would develop a relationship with Yami, which would end within several days because they found it awkward and that they were better off as friends. Lala will have sunk into her depression to the point that she is rapidly producing more and more unstable technologies, by this time. Rito would notice and begin trying to help her break away from her depression again. He would succeed, but learn that she had tried dating other guys, the longest relationship lasting two weeks. She’d admit to him that she would constantly think of him and how she felt like she wasn’t good enough for him, then she would break down and begin sobbing uncontrollably. Rito would hold her in his arms and apologize for hurting her so much stating also that he didn’t realize that it had meant that much to her. She would then say “of course, you idiot” while hugging him and sobbing. She would later stop crying and they would walk hom. The whole walk home Rito would be thinking about how much of an asshole he had been to her over the course of the series by not being honest with himself, not only hurting Lala, but the others as well. This would cause him to seek self improvement and become less obtuse, while still being pretty clueless at times. A few days would pass and Rito would start reflecting again, but would become fixated on one memory, which would be of the time that she had Reversal Flu and had switched into multiple personalities, yet still had one focus, him. He would also remember when she would switch into a personality that hated him and everyone else, but still retained an odd fixation with him. He would ask her what it was and find that she found it emotionally, mentally, and physically impossible to hate him or be turned off by him. Upon hearing this he would go silent with thought, the he would declare his love for her and in great detail. He would also apologize for everything wrong that he had done to her. She would accept his love and apology, and, of course, they would share a kiss. Now that they will have become a couple, they would go about their daily lives, but each morning that Rito woke up to her in his bed naked, he wouldn’t react as severely as he would earlier into the series, even to the point that one morning instead of screaming he would just give her a kiss, then proceed out of the room to let her get dressed, while blushing. She will notice this and be touched that he had finally grown comfortable enough with her being nude near him that he wouldn’t freak out, of course thinking about a future with him and kids, if possible. She would also admit to herself that, even if they don’t have kids immediately, the ride would still be fun and very enjoyable, due to it being the man she loves and the fact that she could feel his morning wood poking her stomach, because who doesn’t get morning wood in an anime involving a naked girl sleeping on them (adding a more mature feel to the show since they would be at least seniors in high school by this point). Their relationship would continue, and so would a focus on daily antics, until, after hinting through awkwardness directed at saruyama, she would admit to Rito that one of the guys she tried dating was Saruyama. Rito would become very mad and storm away, followed by Lala, Saruyama, Yami, and the others. Lala would tell everyone to stay behind, except for Saruyama, since they needed to talk to Rito. Rito, upon seeing that Saruyama had follwed him, would punch him in the nose, breaking it and causing Saruyama to push him and run off to Mikado for treatment. She would tell him that what he did was his fault and that, while wrong, it was still somewhat understandable. During this, Rito would be frwaking out at Lala, asking her how she could date his bestfriend behind his back. To which she would admit that she had only done it because he was nice and reminded her of Rito, but he was too perverted, despite his experience and maturity gained with his temporary relationship with the cat alien, so she dumped him within two days. Rito, knowing how perverted and sexually forward his friend is, would jump to the assumption that Lala and him had become “close” within that time frame. She would assure him that there was no way she would EVER be sexual with Saruyama, because she would only want to be sexual with Rito. Rito would state that he doesn’t believe her and would storm off. She would then become upset, until later Rito would come up to her and tell her that, evenn if she had been sexual with Saruyama, he would still love her and be with her because he understood that she was her own person and she was technically single. She would then reply that she really wasn’t sexual at all with Saruyama or any of the other men, and that she couldn’t stop thinking about Rito. Rito would then admit that he wasn’t sexual with anyone else either, because he wasn’t as in love with them as he initially thought, and he would find himself occasionally thinking about her. They would then share a passionate kiss, and proceed to cuddle up together on the couch to watch television or walk home from school. Later on Lala’s father would catch wind of what all transpired and would become infuriated. He would come to Earth and demand that his daughter come with him to their home world, seeing as to how they had a period of seperation. He would also state the once she and her guardsman were off Earth, he would destroy the planet. Rito and Lala would work together to stop her father and help him understand that they were in love for sure and that they intended to stay together permanently. Her father would then proceed to calm down, but tell Rito that if he EVER hurt his daughter like this again, he would kill him slowly and them proceed to eradicate the planet, after gathering Lala and the guardsmen. Intimidated by the coldness and seriousness in Lala’s father and feeling genuine regret for his actions, Rito would say that he understand and would swear to never let it occur again. Her father would leave, and Rito would then proceed to pass out. Later on, he would wake up to Lala lying next to him in his bed. He would give her a kiss, and, as he would rise to stand, he would feel her grab his arm. He would turn around and see her smiling at him, and, after she got dressed, they would proceed to their school for graduation day. These are just some ideas, but I feel that they could add some definite uniqueness to the show that I have yet to see in a lot of shows of this kind. This kind of thing would also add growth to the characters and a very in depth look into the characters and their pairings, while providing a meaningful a satisfying conclusion. Oh, and Horuna wouldn’t get that major spotlight that she has received, instead she’d shared it with the other girls, until Rito would hit that point where he would realize everything that Lala had done for him.
Oh, and you’d see them age a bit over time.
I haven’t read the manga yet or finished the series, but right off the bat I felt these kind of changes would definitely improve the show, while still adding in good, appropriate comedy.
ups sorry for my bad spelling :))
why did they screw the characters from black cat into the series? they never made it clear why kyouko and eve from black cat(perfectly fine characters) got absorbed into this *easily agreeably* sucky anime?
Ну просто каждый пост у вас шедевр, просто дух захватывает в каждой статье, вам бы ещё пару блогов открыть не мешало!
I think this kind of anime would be more suited for people who accept their perverted side but try not to show it too much. It’s like thinking about what would happen if you let your perverted side show. Y’know, getting slapped, beaten up, etc. This is just a fun way of looking at it.
by the way,are you a man?because you keep talking about how real men are. i would like to know because men and women don’t know very much about each other even though they think they do

i know what real man would stand a chance against yami ichigo kurosaki would kick her ass but besides that shes badass but ya they could have made rito have somekind of fighting ability are something to make his character more interesting
miseed a typo lol!
Thanks for your opinion, now shut up.
If you didn’t like the first 3 episodes or so, why did you continue to watch it?
You’re a fucking retard, writing a whole blog about a show YOU don’t like. I found the show very entertaining, i loved every second of it, story? Amazing. Characters? LOVED THEM! Ending? Maybe not the best ending, but i loved all the episodes, so i don’t really care about that. You’ll see a bit of every character in each episode.
I very much agree with you (though, I am another 2 years late on top of your 5). In his defence, this was written when only the first season (not including the ova) were out, but even still, I feel like even back then you could easily find enough evidence of it being entertaining for people such as ourselves in each independent episode without the wider context of the series as a whole.
